Killed Once: The Two Clocks of Section 702
The statute and the FISA court certifications run on two separate clocks; the certifications renewed in March 2026 keep collection legal until roughly March 17, 2027, and a parallel data-broker purchase channel never needed the statute at all.

On June 12 Section 702 of FISA lapsed for the first time since 2008 after the House failed a short-term extension 198 to 218, yet the warrantless collection it authorizes continues into 2027.
Why it matters: Your international emails, texts, and calls remain collectible and searchable without a warrant, and your location and device records can still be bought from brokers without one.
Date to watch: June 23, 2026 — the House returns from recess and the reauthorization vehicle moves again; watch also for declassification of the March 17 FISC opinion.
