Daniel Kinahan extradited from UAE to face Irish criminal charges
A new permanent bilateral extradition treaty, in force since 18 May 2025, enabled the first return of an Irish national under its terms, placing a single statutory charge before a non-jury court while the presumption of innocence remains intact.

On 9 August 2026 Daniel Kinahan was extradited from the UAE on an Irish government jet and charged that evening before the Special Criminal Court with directing a criminal organisation between 18 October 2015 and 6 April 2017.
Why it matters: The case tests whether international judicial cooperation can operate without eroding the right to counsel, a jury of peers, and the state's burden to prove every allegation beyond reasonable doubt.
Date to watch: 5 October 2026 next Special Criminal Court appearance
