Reported fraud losses by older adults hit $3 billion

The $3 billion is what got reported. The FTC's own report prints a modeled range of $13.3 billion to $119.5 billion and says high-loss underreporting is not well understood. Six percent of older adults' loss reports carried 70 percent of the dollars. The House passed H.R. 9500 on September 15 and the bill is not law.

On October 19, 2026, the FTC told Congress that people 60 and older reported about $3 billion in fraud losses in 2025, up from about $600 million in 2020.

Why it matters: People 80 and older who reported a loss show a $2,000 median, and about 17 percent of their reports were filed by someone else. The Senate has the tax bill.

Date to watch: The Clerk of the House lists the next House session as October 29, 2026, at 12:00 PM. H.R. 9500 already passed that chamber on September 15, 2026. No Senate date is in the sources this episode holds.
