On Oct. 21, 2026, DOJ, USDA and USDA OIG announced the first National USDA Benefits and Program Fraud Enforcement Surge: more than 40 defendants and nearly $45 million in intended losses.

Why it matters: A household can find the month's food money gone the morning it should load. Taxpayers fund the transfer either way.

Date to watch: New York chip-enabled EBT cards are set for the first quarter of 2027 on the Oct. 29 city release. The Oct. 21 Justice Department page sets no sentencing date for the open indictments.
